Research evaluation

Research evaluation
Overall I feel that my secondary research was more effective in finding out what I needed to know. Most of the resources I used for my report were gathered from secondary research. Secondary research was the first technique we used. For it I mostly used the internet I think this was a mistake. I depended heavily on the internet which meant eventually I wasn’t as sure if my information was reliable. I also noticed that a lot of the information I used was coming from opinions to gather hard facts I had to go into websites like ‘The Guardian’ On this website I gathered statistics which showed the increase in illegal downloading. If I had another chance I would perhaps use books from the library. The reason why I didn’t originally is because I felt because illegal downloading was quite a new problem; there wouldn’t be many books about it. I spent much more time on secondary research I think that has a lot to do with the fact that my primary research depended on me getting time with people. E.g. my focus group. I also should have evenly spread different methods of secondary research; if I had a chance to it differently I would most likely look for documentaries on it.
I feel it was a good idea to do secondary research first because we are expected to gather more information because there’s more places to look. So it was helpful to have all this information and then be able to give classmates and family surveys to test out if the theories. A positive thing about doing the secondary research first was that most of the research I gathered was giving facts and statistics that would racist’s questions as to why. Subsequently the primary research methods answered them for example through secondary research I found out that there has been a major rise in illegal downloading. Through primary research I found out people’s thoughts as to why this was happening although the surveys, questionnaires and focus groups wasn’t done on a big enough scale for high quality research.
Most of my resources were found randomly because I would often just type in ‘illegal downloading’ into search engines. The research I did wasn’t methodically done we was researching things based on questions I wanted to know, for example I went on ‘The Guardian’ because I was aware it had allot of facts and it was a good place to look for a political view.
However overall I think did gather enough secondary research the quantity was enough but the quality could have been better if made use of all the methods perhaps I would have found more out. I don’t feel my secondary research helped me answer the questions I originally had. I felt they created more questions for me which was partially helpful because it made me realise some of the questions I had weren’t helping find the things I wanted to find out i.e. who downloads illegally, the reason why they download and what the government is doing to stop it. In relation to secondary research I think the biggest mistake I made was to not plan out what I actually wanted to know for the very beginning I gave my self a broad topic I feel a vast improvement would have happened if I choose a specific subject to research

The first form of primary research I did was interviews. I think out of all the forms I did this was the most helpful for getting information. The advantages of an interview are that if it’s done well you can get a lot of detail; this was what I wanted to do so that all my information found from my secondary research could be answered through my interviewees.
When doing the interviews I was very careful with the people I picked because my secondary researched showed the there was a specific audience who downloaded illegally. Some of the secondary research showed that it was pop/rap/rock music that suffered the most of illegal downloading the target audience for these genres are the youth I also found out that genres such as classical/jazz/R&B hadn’t suffered, the target audience for this are generally older people collectively this showed me that does downloading illegally are the youth. This was one of the best ways I shared secondary and primary research to get results. In order to get the most out of my interview i interviewed a youth who is currently in education. That interview was a success and I feel interviews as a form of research are successful as they allow you to truly find the opinions of your target audience in addition to this it can help you find out more because during an interview you can think of more questions based on something the interviewee said where as with a questionnaire you are stuck with the questions you give out if you want to change it or add to it will be difficult to get to the audience and it will also look un-professional. I believe that with an interview the interviewee can never say to much all the information is valuable. My interviewee gave long full answers which let me know his true thoughts about it also fully explained why he did things. I feel that in questionnaires people more often don’t express there opinions fully. I think it’s a reliable source people make the effort more with it because it’s a more personal thing the interview lasted longer than I anticipated but I was ok with that because I got more than I thought I would. Although some of the things he said were questionable I didn’t dispute or argue with him I tried to be as objective as possible
Questionnaires were positive for me mainly because they gave me a wider audience. In order to have a successful one I had to write questions which were specific and clear. Although my demographic for my research are youth I wanted to get different answers as I only had one interviewee so I got a 5 people or fitting different demographics of race, age and status. I write out my questions on Microsoft Word and printed them off I tested out my questionnaire on my family and a friend because they spread out most of my demographic. I think this was a decent method i got to enough people I could of got more if I did my information would have been more reliable.
Focus groups are a good method I feel but I didn’t go in much detail in terms of my participant’s in it. I should have got mixture of different people but due to time and organisation I wasn’t able to do it to its potential. However, luckily my participants had allotted of opinions on the topic so I did manage to get information out of it. I wasn’t able to get the most out of it as it didn’t last long because of a lack of numbers. If I did it differently I would most likely start by organising a focus group online with random people or just meeting up with people outside of lesson and doing.
My research was on ‘The effects of illegal downloading and what is being done to stop it’. Illegal downloading in general is a huge topic so I made an effort to be specific with what I wanted to find out. I think I could be even more specific with it though if I did overall I would have found more. My research methods both had there good points but I feel that I did best when it came to secondary research in terms of collecting information however I feel that I answered the questions more accurately with my primary because it allowed me to be very specific with what I wanted because it was more personal. My secondary research was found mostly on the internet because there hasn’t really been a book published plus it’s an internet based issue so it was easier to find things. If I had to do it again I would find more of a mixture of people for my primary research just so I can be sure I’m getting different points although I feel that most of the information I had collected was based on me getting what I could not me going the extra mile That is the main improvement I would make

interview

Interview
This interview was with a young man currently in education at Lanfranc secondary school

Q1. Do you download music illegally and if so why ?
A1. I do download music illegally because i cant afford to buy all the music i want to listen to and sometimes youtube dont have all the songs i want. music is something that helps you socialise in life so if im not up to date with the latest musici dont feel part of my friends conversation and its not a nice feeling.

Q2. do you download music illegally. why do you download ?
A2 everyone said yes. there reasons were its free, no jobs or source of income theres not enough encourgment from the law to stop. some people said they dont want to buy it because they are not sure if they will like the whole album. its fast and easy someone suggested that they would perhaps buy specific songs of an album rather than just being given the singles or the full album.

Q3.do you buy music?
A3. No not really. i dont buy my faviourte artists albums because i dont really think they need my support like that. They are rich enough the i think. i have bought a local musicians mix-tape recently because i like his musi and want to support him with funds because at this point his own money is going to create things like the cover and copies of his cd's

Q4. Do you only buy specific types of music ?
A4.yeah i would only buy if i had to rap music cause its my faviourte genre and underground rap/hip hop no pop or comercial stuff.

Q5.Do you think the authorities do enough to stop the growth in illegal
A5.i dont think they do anything at all actually ive never had trouble downloading stuff when ive needed to.

Q6.What websites do you use to download
A6.hot new hip hop is the main site i find everything i want there normally

Q7 Are you often fed links to downloading websites.
A7 i dont look out for them so if they are there i havent noticed

Q8 How often do you download illegally
A8. weekly

Q8 What will be the situation with illegal downloading in 10 years
A8 i think it will all be the same its something i think is to hard to control

I am happy with the feed back i got from this interview i feel that it does a good job of representing the opinions of most secondary school kids. i like the honesty i think this is a reliable source

focus group

Q1. do you download music illegally. why do you download ?
A1 everyone said yes. there reasons were its free, no jobs or source of income theres not enough encourgment from the law to stop. some people said they dont want to buy it because they are not sure if they will like the whole album. its fast and easy someone suggested that they would perhaps buy specific songs of an album rather than just being given the singles or the full album.

Q2 do you buy music?
A2 all of the group agreed that they only buy music from artist they really like because they want them to have enough money to keep making music.

Q3 Do you only buy specific types of music ?
A3 all of the group claimed they normally will only buy from there best artist but a few of them said that if they have been recommended an artist buy a friend with similar music taste then they would consider

Q4 Do you think the authorities do enough to stop the growth in illegal
A4. some people said no but they dont know what should be done. others said jail sentences should be introduced. they collectivley agreed that it also needs to be monitored more strictly.

Q5 What websites do you use to download
A5 frostwire limewire, Im1.net, hot new hip hop, dezedrop and world star

Q6 Are you often fed links to downloading websites.
A6. They all agreed that it would only happen when they were searching up lyrics for songs

Q7 How often do you download illegally
A7 They collectivley agreed they didnt randomly when the artist they listened to released new material

Q8 What will be the situation with illegal downloading in 10 years
A8 half believed that it would have become alot more worse the other half felt it would be alot more harder to do.

the data i collected will help me in the development for my primary research. i believe my focus group was very effective the only place i felt it lacked effectivness was in the demographics of the group they were all of same gender and age. i feel this was however a very reliable way to find information because the target age for illegal downloading are the

Illegal downloading interview
I plan to do one to one interviews with people through camera.
At the moment I’m thinking whether it’s best to do it through vox pops or in-depth interviews in my interview people may feel uncomfortable answering my questions because it has a lot to do with law. So I may have to blur there faces to keep privacy or make it unfocused for the whole body.. I would interview a different range of people
• Old people
• Young people
• White people
• Ethnic minority
• Wealthy people
• Not so wealthy people
• Boys girls

The questions I will ask for example are
1. Why do you download illegally give 3 reasons and arrange in order
2. Do you download every artist or is there still some you will go out and buy
3. Do you think the music industry is doing enough to stop it
4. If it came to a point where there wasn’t any access to downloading and you had to buy would you
5. When is the last time you bought a C.D

sources table....

Date
Activities Sources found How found? REALIABILTY
29.9.10

I went on the media guardian Its talking about file sharing http://www.guardian.co.uk/media
This website is reliable because the information given is not opinions only
Facts that are explaining a situation

01.10.10
In the begin of the lesson I went on intute website Where to download music illegally. http://www.intute.ac.uk/
Reliable because the website is specifically there for study and research
Therefore it must only have information the website creators feel is
Accurate.
01.10.10

I started looking from Google History of streaming http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_media
looked on This is not reliable Wikipedia allows anyone to write there own opinion.
01.10.10

I went though Google to find a video on YouTube. A video of a judge making a ruling on illegal downloading
And the trends/ statistics of illegal downloading over the years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrGdyQhp-bU

http://www.google.com/trends?q=illegal+music+downloading&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all
This is a reliable because you can literally see the judges making the
Decisions showing visuals show it is reliable because it shows its
Actually happening plus the fact its happening in court makes you think
That it must be real.

01.10.10
Went on guardian online media section to find this information I found out places to download legally. Information http://arts.guardian.co.uk/netmusic/page/0,,1127237,00.html
This is reliable as I said guardian is a reliable source which only gives
Facts.
4.10.10

I went on ask jeeves and searched up illegal downloading music I found many different things giving opinions most of them were saying the same thing. which was it has risen over the years a lot http://uk.ask.com/web?q=legal+music+downloads&search=&qsrc=178&o=0&l=dir&siteid=
This may not be as reliable because this search engine accepts any thing so
It’s not certified that the information given is facts.

08.10.10
Through Google I found a link to this website I found out why spotify music streaming may not make t he states. http://www.i4u.com/40583/spotify-free-music-streaming-may-not-make-it-us
Although I got this from a news website it may not be reliable. Because it
Seems to be more of gossip news discussing what they ‘think’ is going to
Happen rather than what actually is going to happen.

08.10.10 Through yahoo I found a link to this website Talks about how illegal downloading faces uk ban http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7240234.stm
BBC is one of the most reliable sources I think because it represent s
Britain so I would think all the information is accurate a and I found it in
The business section
08.10.10 Through yahoo I found link to this website The dangers of illegal music downloading. http://www.technologybasics.co.uk/dangers-of-illegal-music-downloads.html
I think this one may be reliable there’s no hard evidence to make me think so
Except the fact that the information given on this website offers a service
Rather than giving you there opinion on something so for that reason I
Would say it’s reliable.
08.10.0 Webopedia This is about understanding when it actually becomes illegal. http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Internet/2004/music_downloading.asp
This is most likely not reliable because anyone can come on this website
Add there opinion and send it off as the truth.
8.10.10 Google trends This is showing statistics through graphs on the rise of downloading http://www.google.co.uk/trends?q=illegal+downloading
This is reliable because it’s all statistics. However I don’t know where they
Are gathering this information from so I’m not sure if it is a reliable
source
8.10.10 YouTube Podcast from Stephen fry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCk9Cheiqqg
The podcast from Stephen fry is his opinion on something its reliable
Opinion though cause he is a respected well read man so what he is saying
You would assume is for good reasons.
8.10.10 Google blogs Opinions of people about streaming http://www.coolfer.com/blog/
No this isn’t reliable it’s a blog with people just discussing an issue
8.10.10 Media guardian Info on Stephen fry http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/jul/13/stephen-fry-hugh-laurie
This is a reliable report by the guardian about Stephen fry illegal
Downloading
8.10.10 Telegraph Illegal on reaching its peak. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/markets/2813135/Illegal-music-downloads-hit-record-high.html
I think this is reliable because its from a reliable newspaper the ‘Telegraph’
And it’s offering statistics about the rise in something.
8.10.10 THE INDEPENDENT THE CONSEQUENCES OF ILLEGAL DOWNLOADIN http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/features/illegal-downloading-what-happens-if-youre-caught-1736013.html
The independent is another reliable newspaper they are giving laws on
Illegal downloading.
E.HOW Illegal music downloads and laws http://www.ehow.com/list_6774775_illegal-music-downloading-laws.html

This is reliable source re-enforcing the laws down to stop illegal
Downloading

BBC Illegal music downloading is hear to stay http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/2636235.stm
This is someone opinion on why illegal music is hear to stay because
Of this I would say it isn’t reliable its not about facts or information

research process's

after looking at the example of research i have reliased that i need

1.the first thing he did was create broad question so he could get a better idea of where he wanted to go with his research

2. he then begins to go in detail by picking a specific group to research about discussing there demographic.

3. he then went on the net to find information about what he was researching finding it history

4. he looked at things that related to

Other forms of research

experiments- is a test to see if something you are researching is true or not. I think this could come in use when it comes to test something like a new game on a console. If you added a new feature to the game and wanted to see if gamers understood or liked you could gather a group of different people to test it. It is factual and would give you a controlled group of people. A disadvantage is that the amount of people you use will often not reflect the majority views.

participant observation- is when the researcher participates in the activity in order to better understand. This can be very useful if you need your research to be documented as a fact you participating will add to your findings. if someone says something and you don't know if they are being honest or not you doing it may give you a better an idea. A disadvantage to this may occur if you are researching that you aren’t the target audience for then your opinion on it may be not very important

historical research- looking at the history and development of something, or studying old examples of something and comparing with contemporary examples. An advantage to this is if you are researching something in order to create a product you can research how similar products have done and therefore see what it takes to be successful. A disadvantage is sometimes the history can be so out of date that it won’t have any effect on present day

rhetorical analysis- analysis of the techniques used to persuade the audience.
An advantage is that it will help you to brand yourself better if you wanted to market yourself to an audience. it also shows you what the media thinks of there audience and how they are persuaded.

Comparative analysis-
research that compares/contrasts behaviors/media. An advantage is that you can compare products work with those that don’t and then analysis why. Knowing this information may help if you created a media product.
A disadvantage of this t

competitor analysis- close analysis and rating of a range of competitors products. An advantage of this is that it can keep you ahead of your competition by trying to always be better. gives a fuller view of the argument what you are up against and what you need to be better than. A disadvantage is that if you focus on one competitor to much you may become similar to them because there the only thing you look at apart from your own stuff

one on one interviews

I had a one on one with the partner next to us to see the advantages and disadvantages and differences of a questionnaire and a face to face interviews
an advantage of doing face to face interviews is the follow up questions you may get based on the things the interviewee is saying
a disadvantage is that the people could be making up their answers and plus if your face to face they might be scared to tell the truth in case of repercussions that may happen where as when you do it as a questionnaire it is more safe for them sometimes when you are having a face to face discussion when the interviewee answers in a way you weren’t expecting and didn’t want then that might spoil the flow of the interview. however overall I think I would prefer one to ones because you are more likely to get more out of the interviewee because of the follow up questions and sometimes the fact that they might not want to write there long winded answers on paper it would take long or there isn’t enough space it would be so much easier to do it as an interview.

questionnares

In the beginning of the lesson we were given a questionnaire made by Miss which wasnt helpful to answering the question. After looking at it I realised a few things that are good and bad about questionnaires.
Disadvantages
A big disadvantage to it is when the questions don’t actually give you a fact that would help answer the aim of the questionnaire also if its bias questions. Infinite amount of answers i.e you can’t be specific and your conclusions won't be quantified when you are answering questions. You would have to print allot of copies to get a full rounded answer
Advantages
an advantage is that they are cheap to have a successful one you need to ask questions that will help you find out definite things also some people don’t like talking face to face or through focus groups so giving them the choice to write their feelings about a subject can be helpful.
when making a questionare you have to think about how are the questions gooing to help you and how are you going to sum up all the questions being answered after the person has filled out the questionare

Thats what a bad questionare would look like

1. Name:

2. Please circle which media forms you would buy a hard copy of (eg CD, DVD):

a. Music Games Film

3. Please circle which media forms you download:

a. Music Games Film

4. Where do you store your downloads? _____________________________________________________

5. Please circle which media forms you download without paying:

15/09/10

we were asked to do a few questions on finding figures this was my findings.
Q1.find out bbc3’s top five most viewed programmes this week?
A1. 5.edinburgh commedy fest 4.eastenders (thur) 3.Eastebders(fri) 2.dont tell the bride 1. Eastenders (tues)
A2. 526,216
Q3. On the RAJAR site in the listening figures menu find out what percentage of the population listened to radio 1 last month
A3. 51,618,000
Q4. Search a ‘search term’ trend for a celebrity on google identify a peak and connect to an actual event

we then thought about why ratings/audience figures are so important.
the reasons i believe its so important is. firstly, producers would want to know how well there audience is recieving there product and so check the amount of people are watching they may also do this in order to compare themselves to other similar programms. secondly, it can show you when the peak times are on certain channels when audiences tune in the most. finally if you get very high ratings it makes advertisers pay more for 30 second slots a good example of a programm that does that is X Factor.

focus groups.
i think focus groups fundimentally is a good thing gathering people around to discuss there views on a product or an idea   is a very helpful research tool especially if the people you asking the questions to are the targets of your product/idea. being in a group made me think about some of my own points because after discussing the point i found some of there points was more valid than mine. i think the only thing about that isn't positive is because the size is not very big there opinions may not represent

Wednesday, 8 September 2010

Research Methods

primary research means to get ther source of information directly from the main source. in the media surveys are one way used to get primary information. focus groups gather together and talk about what they like and dislike about a product. in films you may have screening sometimes the opinion of the audience is so important that if they dont like bits of a film, its likely to be re-shot focus groups are specifically designed for its target audience. in the media it is also common to have one on one interviews so that you can 'grill' your interviewee more group interviews are also done but one on ones are proven to be more effective. observation is very direct for example you empirical means research you can look and see i.e. observable ((e.g im going to do some empirical research))... contacting the producer of a media text is a good
chat room can be a good place to look for primary resources you could go there to find out how people feel about a new media project.

secondary - means to gather your sources based on someone elses thoughts, opinions or discoveries for example the media guardian, telegraph(technology) all online aswell !! radio 4 the media show podcast on wednsdays because it is what peoples said about things

Quantitative

we would use both methods for research for many reasons because of reliability helps whenit comes to analysis because

are magazines representing ethnic minorities fairly?

contact analysis is the form of research we used to come about our findings all of our informations was primary as we got our information straight from the source which was a magazine 'instyle'. after doing a count we found that the majority of people were white which showed that white people are represented most in THAT magazine. But we didnt answer the question because we only looked at one magazine, for us to fully answer the question we would have to look at other magazines and compare.
the good thing about the research we did was that it was all primary so there wasnt any doubt in the authenticity of our findings because we did emperical research we l
the bad thing about it was we only looked at one
